Taiwan\u2019s coast guard detained a cargo ship and its Chinese crew on Tuesday and said it was investigating whether the vessel had deliberately cut an undersea internet cable, in the latest possible breach of the island\u2019s communication lines.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6oz00073b6ms2p1ovvw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The vessel suspected of damaging the cable connecting Taiwan to its outlying Penghu Islands carried a \u201cflag of convenience\u201d and was crewed by eight Chinese nationals, Taiwan\u2019s coast guard said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaw08g000t3b6mklh4ts35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A \u201cflag of convenience\u201d vessel is one that flies the flag of a country other than the country of ownership.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p000083b6mfhjtk8ov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The ship \u201cHong Tai,\u201d registered in the West African nation of Togo with Chinese funding, had been lingering near the cable in waters off the southwestern coast of Taiwan since Saturday evening and did not respond to multiple broadcasts from Taiwan\u2019s coast guard, the statement added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p000093b6m70ar3r5d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Shortly after the ship dropped anchor in the early hours of Tuesday, Taiwan\u2019s telecom company Chunghwa Telecom detected that the cable had been disconnected.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p0000a3b6mqypjb5zt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The coast guard said it intercepted and boarded the vessel, before escorting it back to a port in the city of Tainan for investigation.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p0000b3b6mv9csyzwb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Taiwanese authorities said they could not rule out the possibility of a Chinese \u201cgray zone operation,\u201d a coercive or subversive act that falls below the threshold of war.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p0000c3b6mw4w0qj51@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhether it was an intentional act of sabotage or purely an accident needs to be further probed,\u201d the coast guard said in the statement, adding that the matter is now under investigations by prosecutors \u201cin accordance with national security-level guidance.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p0000d3b6mhmbtwtw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In recent years, multiple undersea telecoms cables around Taiwan have suffered suspicious damage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p0000e3b6mfllbaxf7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In January, Taiwanese authorities said a Chinese-linked cargo vessel could have cut an international undersea cable off the island\u2019s northern coast.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p0000f3b6mpjzzo8o4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2023, Taiwan officials blamed Chinese ships for two incidents in which cables connecting Taiwan\u2019s main island to its outlying islands of Matsu were damaged, causing an internet blackout. They stopped short of saying the acts were deliberate.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p0000g3b6m3e4hq694@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The incidents have raised concerns among Taiwan authorities of \u201cgray zone\u201d activities that could hamper the island\u2019s internet and communications with the outside world.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p0000h3b6mriz6w2tz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those concerns come as Taiwan has faced increasing intimidation from Beijing, which claims the self-ruled democracy as its own territory and has vowed to take control of it, by force if necessary.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7kaq6p0000i3b6mjc79gy31@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            They also follow a string of incidents in recent years of damage to undersea infrastructure worldwide, including communications cables.
