{"id":4028,"date":"2025-03-05T15:55:25","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T15:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/republicanstradetoday.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/05\/rare-cyclone-threatens-millions-on-australias-east-coast\/"},"modified":"2025-03-05T15:55:25","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T15:55:25","slug":"rare-cyclone-threatens-millions-on-australias-east-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/republicanstradetoday.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/05\/rare-cyclone-threatens-millions-on-australias-east-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare cyclone threatens millions on Australia\u2019s east coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vbwvkp003w26qqeacd70rt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Millions of residents along Australia\u2019s eastern coast are preparing for the impact of the most southerly cyclone to threaten the region in more than five decades.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc09a7000b3b6ml5bqj3be@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Tropical Cyclone Alfred, with strength the equivalent of a category 1 Atlantic hurricane, is expected to cross the coast just south of the Queensland capital of Brisbane, home to 2.5 million people, in the early hours of Friday, potentially at high tide, complicating the days ahead for emergency services.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc09a7000c3b6mec3qclxj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis is a rare event \u2013 to have a tropical cyclone in an area that is not classified as part of the tropics, here in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales (NSW),\u201d said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Brisbane on Wednesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc09a7000d3b6ml92rjc5k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The last cyclone to cross near Brisbane of a similar strength was Cyclone Zoe back in 1974, which caused major flooding in the city and NSW\u2019s Northern Rivers region.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc09a7000e3b6mxn8gltrq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Brisbane\u2019s population has more than doubled since then, but experts say the worst of Cyclone Alfred could be felt south of the storm\u2019s eye, along popular tourist beaches from the Gold Coast to northern NSW.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vbx96h00003b6mypx22nnd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe haven\u2019t seen anything quite like this for a good 50 years,\u201d said Darrell Strauss, coastal management researcher at Griffith University.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc0usc000k3b6mdxganuus@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere are areas where storm surge is the biggest problem, and then there\u2019s areas where high waves and coastal erosion and inundation from the sea directly due to the waves are a big problem. So, we\u2019ve got a combination of all of that from Brisbane to the Northern Rivers (of NSW),\u201d Strauss said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc0usc000l3b6mcoxwttun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As of Wednesday, Cyclone Alfred was just over 400 kilometers (250 miles) off the coast, moving west with destructive winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour), according to Australia\u2019s Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc0usc000m3b6m0ymipl04@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Creeks and rivers in northern NSW were expected to flood, threatening an unwelcome return to scenes of 2022 when heavy rain saw several rivers burst their banks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc0usc000n3b6mgxz3y9z4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Three years on, some flooded homes are still uninhabitable and delays in rebuilding forced residents to live in temporary housing and tents for far longer than many hoped.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc0spz000i3b6m842xq9mr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe Northern Rivers has gone through hell over the last few years. We\u2019re particularly concerned about some of those communities,\u201d NSW Premier Chris Minns said Tuesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc15dr000s3b6mrmm4736n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Brisbane, residents were busy sandbagging their homes and stripping supermarket shelves of food and bottled water as authorities issued warnings about potential flooding.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc15dr000t3b6ml20e9qjn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Modeling showed 20,000 properties across Brisbane could be impacted by storm surge or flash flooding, according to the Lord Mayor\u2019s office.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc0xnn000q3b6mcghf20as@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Beaches in northern NSW and along the Queensland coast were closed, as authorities warned of hazardous surf with waves of more than 5 meters (16 feet). Storm surges could go even higher, up to 10 meters (32 feet), according to the NSW State Emergency Services.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc1mom000y3b6m9hi9qn94@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Queensland Premier David Crisafulli urged residents near vulnerable coastal areas to follow evacuation orders.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7vc1mom000z3b6mh1hpf6q8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf it was the case that this system, which has strengthened, was to cross on high tide in the middle of the night, and you\u2019re in that storm surge, the last place you want to be is in your home.
