Having depleted its own domestic fishing resources, similar Chinese flotillas have been spotted off the coast of Western Africa, in parts of the disputed South China Sea and around South America.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm80ibhuh00393b6nw13mqb8z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Driving the expansion of China\u2019s global fishing footprint is the ever-growing demand. As China grows richer, its appetite for seafood has also soared. Once a luxury reserved for coastal elites, shrimp, squid, and saltwater fish have become everyday dishes in inland Chinese cities. The country is now the world\u2019s largest seafood consumer and, by one estimate, is expected to drive 40% of the world\u2019s seafood consumption growth by 2030.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm80ibhuh003b3b6n4yg92mtp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Approaching the fleet of fishing vessels at night is akin to watching a sunrise, Schvartzman recounted. Others have described the flotilla as a \u201cfloating city\u201d which fills the entire field of view, he recalled, having spent over a decade monitoring overfishing off the coast of Argentina.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm80ibhuh003c3b6na87iealt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201c(Only) when you get closer, you find that each light is\u2026 a vessel with hundreds of very powerful lights used to fish squid,\u201d Schvartzman says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm80ibhuh003d3b6no3niwl26@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            By comparison, the Argentine fleet that was authorized to fish inside the EEZ consists of between 70 and 75 ships, according to Dar\u00edo S\u00f3crate, the executive director of the Argentine Chamber of Squid Jig Owners.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm80ibhuh003e3b6ndirr6153@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This imbalance harms Argentine fishermen, S\u00f3crate says.
