Now their Indigenous owners want them back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4f9qmy00aj26p63oc53yr9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Inside Vatican City, the home of Pope Leo, lies a vast collection of Indigenous artifacts that some people say shouldn\u2019t be there.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fbx4600053b6m4xgf7q9d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The collection includes thousands dozens of colonial-era objects, including a rare Inuvialuit sealskin kayak from the western Arctic, a pair of embroidered Cree leather gloves, a 200-year-old wampum belt, a baby belt from the Gwich\u2019in people and a beluga tooth necklace.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fbx4600063b6mdwy97wk4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            They are relics of a time of cultural destruction, critics say, taken by the Roman Catholic Church a century ago as trophies of missionaries in far-off lands.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4i42py00003b6mboxg2hql@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pope Francis promised to return the artifacts to communities in Canada as part of what he called a \u201cpenitential pilgrimage\u201d for abuses against Indigenous people by the Church. But several years on, they remain in the Vatican\u2019s museums and storage vaults.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4im73800023b6mctw24z9x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Indigenous leaders are now urging Pope Leo to finish what Francis started and give the artifacts back.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4hpdki0000356mo2nstwn4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen things were taken that weren\u2019t somebody else\u2019s to take, it\u2019s time to return them,\u201d said Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4f9t7000003b6m1qcyidpl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Calls to repatriate the artifacts began gaining steam in 2022, when a group of First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis delegates visited Rome for long-awaited talks with Pope Francis about historical abuses at Canada\u2019s church-run residential schools.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fc71g000c3b6msi4gu42z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While there, the delegates were given a tour of some of the Vatican\u2019s collection and were astonished to see treasured relics stored thousands of miles away from the communities who once used them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fc71g000d3b6mpped1z7n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt was quite an emotional experience to see all of these artifacts \u2013 whether they be M\u00e9tis, First Nations of Inuit artifacts \u2013 so far away,\u201d said Victoria Pruden, President of the M\u00e9tis National Council, which represents the M\u00e9tis Indigenous people of northwestern Canada.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fc71g000e3b6mmg1knitr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Following that visit \u2013 and Francis\u2019s subsequent trip to Canada, where he apologized for the Church\u2019s role in residential schools \u2013 the late pontiff pledged to return the relics.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmb4fdyig000u3b6mrfa1q9ut@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"an-expo-of-indigenous-objects\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        An expo of Indigenous objects<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fc6mt000a3b6m1ebbs54o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            How the artifacts came to be in the pope\u2019s possession requires a trip back to the era of Pope Pius XI, who led the Catholic Church from 1922.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fdqqc000p3b6mi2zoebhz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pius was known for promoting the work of missionaries, and in 1923 sent a call out to orders worldwide to gather evidence of the church\u2019s vast reach.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fdqqc000q3b6my8v1apnk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHe said: Send in everything related to Indigenous life. Send in sacred belongings. Send in language materials. Send in Indigenous people, if you can manage it,\u201d said Gloria Bell, an assistant professor of art history at McGill University.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fdqqc000r3b6m4r76v7rm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere were thousands of belongings stolen from Indigenous communities to please the greed of Pope Pius XI,\u201d said Bell, who documented the exhibition in her book \u201cEternal Sovereigns: Indigenous Artists, Activists, and Travelers Reframing Rome.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fdqai000n3b6m838vc77p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The church\u2019s collection of Indigenous artifacts was compiled at a time when the cultural identity of Canada\u2019s Indigenous people was being erased.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fgt5e00123b6m8n8x1r58@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Canadian government had made it compulsory for Indigenous children to attend residential schools \u2013 boarding schools largely run by the Catholic Church designed by law to \u201ckill the Indian in the child\u201d and assimilate them into White Christian society.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fgt5e00133b6mkmml6x4z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In these schools, Indigenous children were not allowed to speak their language or practice their culture and were harshly punished for doing so. Thousands of children died from abuse or neglect, with mass graves still being found decades after the last residential school closed in 1998.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fgt5e00143b6m3p7mw0no@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Even as this injustice unfolded, their cultural belongings and artifacts were being displayed in the 1925 Vatican Mission Exposition, a 13-month long exhibit promoting the Church\u2019s influence around the world, which drew millions of visitors.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fgt5e00153b6msa6w4m73@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Vatican has claimed the artifacts were gifts to the Pope. But Bell says that\u2019s a \u201cfalse narrative\u201d which doesn\u2019t consider the context in which the objects were acquired.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fgt5e00163b6m1whtscty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis acquisition period was a really assimilative period in Canadian colonial history,\u201d Bell said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fgt5e00173b6m07xaxsbf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The artifacts were never returned. A century later, many of the cultural objects and artwork remain at the Vatican, either in storage or on display at the Vatican\u2019s Anima Mundi Ethnological Museum.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmb4fid5n001p3b6mdt0xrf4f@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-papal-apology\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A papal apology<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fgskf00103b6mcl1jclm0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Laurie McDonald, an elder from Enoch Cree Nation who grew up on an Indigenous reserve in Mask\u00eakosihk, Alberta in the 1950s and 1960s, knows what it\u2019s like to have your culture taken from you.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fhzrf001e3b6me0nau64z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe were forbidden as a nation to use our cultural regalia, our cultural tools, or our medicines, and if we were caught, we were reported to the Indian agent,\u201d said McDonald, referring to the Canadian government official responsible for assimilation policy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fhzrf001f3b6mw3h8rbsm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            McDonald was just 11 years old when he was forcibly taken from the home he shared with his grandmother and sent to Ermineskin Indian Residential School, one of Canada\u2019s largest residential schools. Two weeks in, he tried to escape, but became caught on a barbed wire fence and a staff member ripped him off, leaving scars.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fhzrf001h3b6m5nndks5h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2022, McDonald returned to the site of his former school to witness Pope Francis\u2019s historic apology on behalf of the Catholic Church.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fhzrf001i3b6mv4w5cnxk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI am deeply sorry,\u201d Francis said, looking out over the land of four First Nations. \u201cI humbly beg forgiveness for the evil committed by so many Christians against the Indigenous Peoples.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fhzrf001j3b6m81zva8k4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pope Francis\u2019s apology on behalf of the Catholic Church was deeply meaningful for many Indigenous peoples in Canada. But reconciliation is a long process, and Indigenous leaders say they hope Leo will continue what Francis started \u2013 first and foremost, by returning the artifacts.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fhzrf001k3b6m4wdpv2n3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            McDonald said the objects represent stories and legacies which should have been passed down generations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fhzrf001l3b6m2qtu3inj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThose may have been simple stuff to you, but to us, they were very, very important,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmb4fjcwo00253b6mkjn44ld6@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"thou-shall-not-steal\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018Thou shall not steal\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fhz57001c3b6mz65nsvuj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            During his visit to Canada in 2022, Francis said local Catholic communities were committed to promoting Indigenous culture, customs, language and education processes \u201cin the spirit of\u201d The United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, according to CBC.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fj4p4001u3b6mlf6m5k9a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Article 12 of UNDRIP says Indigenous peoples have the right to use and control their ceremonial objects, and states shall endeavor to return them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fj4p4001v3b6myums2t28@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Asked again in 2023 about repatriating the Indigenous artifacts, Francis told reporters aboard his plane, \u201cThis is going on, with Canada, at least we were in agreement to do so.\u201d He invoked the seventh commandment \u2013 \u201cthou shall not steal\u201d \u2013 in expressing his support for restitution.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fj4p4001w3b6myo73ckn2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In recent years, museums around the world have increasingly returned items in their collections that were stolen or potentially acquired unethically to their countries of origin.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fj4p4001x3b6map06grvt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last year, new regulations came into effect in the US requiring museums and federal agencies to consult or obtain informed consent from descendants, tribes or Native Hawaiian Organizations before displaying human remains or cultural items.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fj4p5001y3b6mof2c7ec7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2022, Pope Francis returned three fragments of the Parthenon sculptures to Greece in a move he described as a \u201cgesture of friendship,\u201d according to the BBC.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fj4p5001z3b6mm2g4rxwd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, a 2024 investigation by Canadian newspaper the Globe and Mail found that the Vatican had not returned a single Indigenous-made item to Canada in recent years, except for a 200-year-old wampum belt which was loaned to a museum in Montreal for just 51 days in 2023.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fj4p500203b6mw8bt8l0d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pruden, of the M\u00e9tis National Council, said Francis \u201creally moved things forward by embracing (UNDRIP).\u201d She and other Indigenous leaders hope to soon see the artifacts returned.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fj4p500213b6m6zu98h1l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat a beautiful homecoming it would be to welcome these gifts that were made by our grandmothers and our grandfathers,\u201d Pruden said, calling the objects \u201cvery important historical pieces that have a story to tell.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb5s36z30000356mv9swr7df@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed the return of the artifacts in a meeting with Canadian Catholic Cardinals in Rome this month ahead of Leo\u2019s first mass, Jaime Battiste, a member of parliament who was also at the meeting, told the Canadian Press.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fj45a001s3b6mrv9cpcb8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Woodhouse Nepinak said it\u2019s \u201can uncomfortable and tough issue, but it has to be done.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmb4fjva3002b3b6m4e9l1dx9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">
