He was returning to the US after a brief visit home when his American dream was abruptly cut short.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7l00063b6mrllsr2gj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to Zhang, he was detained at the border for 48 hours by US officials, who confiscated his phone and laptop, and searched his belongings. Within just three months, more than 1,000 Chinese nationals had their visas revoked, and the order remained in place under former President Joe Biden.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7l000m3b6mmpkmxz1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            They include David Yang, whose heart sank when he saw Rubio\u2019s announcement. \u201cThis is just too surreal,\u201d said the second-year PhD student in theoretical chemistry at a top university in the Midwestern US.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7l000n3b6mytty33yu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen the news broke, some classmates said they were working on their final assignments but completely lost the motivation to continue. It\u2019s been incredibly stressful,\u201d he said. \u201cThe constant policy changes bring so much uncertainty into our lives. It really impacts productivity and, over time, takes a toll on your mental health \u2013 and for me, it already has.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7l000t3b6m37mb0via@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Worried about his visa, Yang is planning on canceling his trip home this winter. He told them both of his parents were. They then questioned him about his own affiliation with the Communist Youth League, he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7l000x3b6mcn6tvdzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI said I\u2019ve never had any connection with them. The Communist Youth League charges us seven or eight yuan (about $1) a year, but there are no activities at all. But the officials said: \u2018You are lying.\u2019 I honestly didn\u2019t know what to say. I could only sit there, stunned,\u201d Zhang said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmbaf1xie001n3b6m80dv36tp@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"other-alternatives\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Other alternatives<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m000z3b6mddevvntd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Facing potential deportation in the middle of their hard-won education, some Chinese students are considering other options.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m00103b6mbkm84end@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ella Liu, a math undergraduate at the University of Michigan, is visiting family in the southern city of Guangzhou before her summer research project in the US starts next month.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m00113b6mynuskerc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMe and my parents are all praying that I won\u2019t be banned from entering the country in June,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m00123b6m737xuehi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Liu was drawn to the US by its academic freedom and resources. But if the hardline visa policy continues, she might consider transferring to another university in Europe or Hong Kong.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m00133b6m6qs89lzb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI am very determined to study mathematics and there are also many excellent math resources in other countries, such as in France,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m00143b6mta5f4moh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Like many Chinese students, Liu comes from a middle-class family. In recent years, the number of Chinese students in the US has steadily declined from a peak in the 2019-2020 school year \u2013 a drop that coincides with the Covid-19 pandemic but also increasing friction between the two governments.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m00163b6melm9w57o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Nelson Urena Jr., co-founder and director of college counseling at an education management firm in Shanghai, said that for years many Chinese families saw American universities as the \u201cgold standard\u201d for college education.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m00173b6mdvz2r0yc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since around 2018, however, he has noticed more interest from students and parents alike in universities in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, as well as the semi-autonomous Chinese city of Hong Kong.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m00183b6mh85rc1oz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cA lot of families were concerned legitimately about their children\u2019s safety, and then also just the rhetoric of, you know, whether they\u2019re welcome in the US,\u201d he said, citing issues such as gun violence and racist hostility or even violence against Asian people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m00193b6m1u7t05kj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMore recently, I think people are starting to see the growing disconnect between the US and China, and feeling like maybe things are going to be more difficult for them \u2013 from getting the visa to making payments for tuitions.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001a3b6mnagz7drs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Rubio\u2019s announcement Wednesday also vowed to \u201crevise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications\u201d from China, including Hong Kong.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001b3b6monxi6hdn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since then, Urena has been inundated by phone calls from anxious students preparing to start their college education in the US. But he didn\u2019t have a ready response for them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001c3b6mng7tv920@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s just a lot of uncertainty right now. The students are trying to figure out what to do\u2026The options are very limited at this point \u2013 Do they do a gap year? Do they go to university elsewhere? Do they have to go back to the application process?\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001d3b6mbgmyz3xg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Nevertheless, for some Chinese parents, the allure of American higher education has not worn off.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001e3b6myqi2v16d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Arno Huang, a 56-year-old businessman from China\u2019s coastal Fujian province, still wants to send his kids to the US for graduate schools after they finish undergraduate studies in Hong Kong.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001f3b6mdix5hhwp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe US represents one of the most civilized, developed, and open places for humanity. Although US-China relations are currently strained, smart people still recognize this fact,\u201d said Huang.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001g3b6mpws65rfu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Having kids studying in the US gives a family \u201cface,\u201d he said, using a common Chinese phrase to refer to good reputation or social standing. \u201cOnce their child is in the US, they can proudly tell others, \u2018Look how successful my son is!\u2019\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001h3b6meim5fct2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Zichen Wang, a research fellow at the Center for China and Globalization, a non-government think tank in Beijing, lamented a seemingly bygone era, when Chinese officials, entrepreneurs and scientists alike were trained in the US \u2013 especially those who played key roles during China\u2019s reform and opening-up era that began in 1978.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001i3b6mdpj9jvwk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen they returned to China, they brought back not only professional knowledge and credentials, but also a deep respect and admiration for America as an open and inclusive society,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001j3b6m0z1l7kqk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI believe many Chinese people see what makes America great not merely as its economic or military strength, but its openness \u2013 its world-class universities, its confidence in the marketplace of ideas, and its ability to attract top global talent,\u201d Wang added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbaf1q7m001k3b6mvlls00m8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThat, at least in my view, is what many people around the world truly admire about the United States.\u201d    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kiwi Zhang, a computer science student from China, was full of hope for his academic future in the United States \u2013 until his visa was revoked at the US border last week.
