The location of his wife and two children are also not known.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4fs2m0z00033b6m1i3vd2on@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since the uprising began, and the rebels rapidly advanced through the country, Assad has kept a low profile.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4fs2m0z00043b6mg8oy8igd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After meeting with Iran\u2019s foreign minister last weekend, he pledged to fight \u201cterrorist organizations\u201d but has otherwise made little comment as the rebels captured major cities.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4fs2m0z00063b6m7fgoro0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Assad\u2019s Presidential Guard were also no longer deployed at his usual residence, as they would be if he was there, the source said, fueling speculation ahead of Sunday\u2019s developments that he may have escaped.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4fs2m0z00073b6mlljbb4mt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Syria\u2019s presidential office denied that Assad had left Damascus or travelled to another country, saying that some foreign media outlets were \u201cspreading rumors and false news.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4fs2m0z00083b6m90wgkeml@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After the rebels took the capital, they said he had fled and were searching for him. Some of the fighters along with civilians began ransacking his official residences.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4fs2m0z00093b6mitje3w9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Amid the rumors, Russia\u2019s foreign ministry issued a statement Sunday saying Assad had \u201cdecided to leave the presidential post and left the country, giving instructions to transfer power peacefully.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4fs2m0z000a3b6mycsp0t0u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The statement added that Russia \u201cdid not participate in these negotiations.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4fs2m0z000d3b6mg20ujedw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Who might host Assad? Russia is an obvious destination, although the foreign ministry did not say where he was heading to. Iran is another possibility.
