Twenty-five years later, when Johnson found herself in northern Ghana being made a queen, she couldn\u2019t quite believe where life had led her.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000b356mmp3e81fm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In front of an adoring crowd in Tamale, the largest city in northern Ghana, Johnson was given her honorary title of \u201cZosimli Naa\u201d in October 2021. It was conferred on her by the Dakpema, Abdul-Razik Salifu, a local spiritual leader, with Zosimli Naa roughly translating as \u201cFriendship Queen\u201d \u2014 effectively making her the Dakpema\u2019s head of development in the area.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000c356msncxb47l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Thousands of miles from home, riding on a horse and dressed in traditional royal attire, Johnson would have been forgiven for thinking she was in a dream.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4b71iz5001d356motvrb97i@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"i-had-to-abandon-a-lot-of-my-childhood-goals\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018I had to abandon a lot of my childhood goals\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000f356m1jayapa3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Johnson\u2019s journey began as a young mother in 1990s Detroit, a time she remembers as \u201ca bit of a challenge.\u201d It\u2019s an understatement. She recalled a relative dropping her off, a pregnant 15-year-old, at the foster home, and promising to pick her up when the child was born. They never returned.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000g356mmstojn78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI had to abandon a lot of my childhood goals,\u201d she said. \u201cI just had to dig deep and find some sort of strength.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000h356m1w1a3b1j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When her daughter D\u2019Kiya was 11, Johnson started taking her on trips abroad \u2014 first to the Bahamas, then Hong Kong, then South America. For the first time, her travels took her to West Africa. Her arrival there \u2014 which she describes as a \u201creturn\u201d \u2014 \u201cfelt like a huge sigh of relief,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000k356m6dm7b82o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Soon after her first journey, Johnson founded Green Book Travel in 2018, a company that organizes trips to West Africa for members of the diaspora. Named after the annual travel guide that provided Black people with information to keep them safe in Jim Crow America, Green Book Travel takes people to historically significant locations including sites of deportation in the transatlantic slave trade.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000l356mikv2te34@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The trips immediately attracted hundreds of people, Johnson said, and her travels to West Africa became more frequent. On one trip, she found herself physically compelled \u2014 her \u201cbody was on fire\u201d \u2014 to visit northern Ghana.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000m356m8co605fp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On her second day in the region, she was asked to pay a customary visit to the Dakpema and his elders in Tamale. She quickly realized that this was no ordinary meeting.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000n356mvht9j2xt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey started consulting amongst each other,\u201d she said, \u201cand then they said \u2018we want you to go to prepare to be the Queen.\u2019\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4b72jmw001j356mgmalc87h@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"becoming-royalty\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Becoming royalty<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000p356mw9mx5fdc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Initially, Johnson did not understand the significance of the offer. But when she recounted the meeting to a village elder, he nearly crashed his car.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000q356mtbfmxw2n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Four months later, with her daughter and best friend alongside her, Johnson was \u201censkinned\u201d in Tamale \u2014 officially recognized as Friendship<strong> <\/strong>Queen \u2014 before being introduced to the community in a parade at the annual Damba festival, in which she rode on a horse to cheers from the crowd.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000r356m5xkuqu8n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt was overwhelming because the crowd was so big,\u201d said Kendall Jones, Johnson\u2019s best friend who was by her side at the event. \u201cIt was my first time ever experiencing having people chase your car down as you\u2019re driving away.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000s356mj6mslynp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The role of Friendship Queen comes with an elevated status and practical responsibilities to the community. Johnson works together with elders of the Dagbon Kingdom, which dates back to the 14th century and comprises around five million people, to run positive initiatives in Tamale, where she now lives. So far, together with her charitable foundation Kith and Kin, she has worked to provide clean water, sanitary products, and shoes to the community, and is working on a scheme to support orphans. Locally, she is revered.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000t356myh2phnus@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cYou are put on a pedestal,\u201d she said, \u201cThere are all the formalities \u2014 the bowing, the \u2018Her Royal Majesty,\u2019 making sure that you\u2019re taken care of.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4b72s5h001m356mjd5asi11@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"from-detroit-to-tamale\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        From Detroit to Tamale<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000v356mf051lf14@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s a difficult adjustment for someone unfamiliar with celebrity. But to Johnson, the role comes naturally. \u201cShe represents peace, unity, hope and the connection of our past to the future,\u201d said the Dakpema, who was instantly impressed by Johnson upon her first visit to his palace. \u201cShe is very popular within Dagbon and highly respected. Dr Susan Herlin, an academic from Kentucky, had her title conferred in 1995 and died in 2014. Seven years later, Johnson became the next person to receive the title from the Dakpema Palace.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000x356m5c8w4k3e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe felt she was the right choice based on her qualities and her connection to both the Dagbon Kingdom and the diaspora,\u201d said the Dakpema. \u201cBy having a Queen who embodies both our rich cultural heritage and strong ties to the world, we open the door to cultural exchange, investment and global awareness.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4b70f0o000y356mnpueimvs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In November 2024, Johnson was granted full Ghanaian citizenship.
